The town of Darien, Connecticut, located on the shores of the Long Island Sound, in Fairfield County, is a rather small community, and one of the wealthiest towns in the US. Darien was originally a part of Stamford until 1737, when it became known as Middlesex Parish, but it wasn’t incorporated till 1820.
Before the American Revolution, there were several small farms, a shipyard and a sawmill in town, and locals gained their living through agriculture, fishing and small ship trading. The population of Darien was barely 1,000 people before 1848. Once the Civil War was over and the railroad came to town, Darien attracted a large number of wealthy New Yorkers who built summer homes in town, and ended up moving here, while commuting to their jobs.
Today, the town of Darien is a bedroom community that offers wonderful services to residents. It is conveniently located on the Metro North Train line, providing an easy 50 minute commute into New York City.
Plenty of untouched land and clean waters recommend Darien as an amazing place to live, for people who love the outdoors. At the same time, people who are more active and love comfort will find everything they need in town. It has one of the best libraries in the country- the Darien Public Library - a great educational system, as well as various parks, beaches and country clubs that provide involved residents a lovely list of services and activities to enjoy. In addition, Darien has the largest Little League Program in the country, and the YMCA offers many classes and athletic opportunities.
