Old Greenwich Neighborhood - Greenwich, CT

With a population of under ten thousand, one will find that the heart of Old Greenwich lies in its old world charm.

Shops beneath multi-colored awnings with flowerpots lining the streets, as well as a community that all seems to know and respect each other, is the reason why Old Greenwich has maintained its presence for much of recent history.

Old Greenwich was founded by Elizabeth Fones Winthrop, niece and daughter-in-law of John Winthrop, who founded and governed the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The area now known as Greenwich Point was actually known as “Elizabeth Neck” in recognition of its 1640 purchase of Greenwich Point and some of the area that is now called Old Greenwich.

Old Greenwich’s business district on Sound Beach Avenue was simply known as “Sound Beach” in the 19^th century and had a large industrial presence on the area.

Greenwich Point Park is the town’s largest beach and can be found south-west off the main land on a long, thin peninsula, and can be visited seasonally by residents.

Old Greenwich has its own stop on the Metro-North Railroad so getting away to New York City for the day won’t be any hassle at all, and if you’re looking for more of a quiet place to spend your day - then Binney Park, a lush retreat compete with a duck pond and little bridges may be just for you.
