About the Town

The town of Monroe, named after President James Monroe, is a small community in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Settled in 1639, Monroe was a part of Stratford and it was known as North Stratford in 1744. Incorporated in 1823, the town is bordered by Easton, Newtown, Oxford, Shelton and Trumbull.

It its early years, Monroe was an agricultural community, but as the railroad came to town, everything changed. The produce that was sold only locally, got to market much quicker and for the first time the possibility of shipping manufactured goods emerged. The town experienced an unprecedented growth with the appearance of factories for producing shirts, carriages and mill goods. However, by the end of the 19th century, everything changed and there were barely 900 people living in Monroe. The situation remained like that until 1950-1960 when soldiers returned from war and people began to turn their attention to Monroe. It was then, when the town started growing again.

Today, the town of Monroe is mostly a bedroom community of Stamford and New York City. Over time, the town managed to maintain its rural feel, having only a few companies headquartered here. With many open spaces and beautiful parks, Monroe is the kind of town that always offers great recreational activities. You can explore miles of hiking trails, enjoy a day of fishing on one of the town’s lakes, swim or go boating. Residents of Monroe are offered tennis courts, ball fields, golf courses, and sandy beaches on the Long Island Sound. In addition, the education opportunities in Monroe are truly wonderful, the town’s schools constantly ranking high among Connecticut’s best schools.

Monroe is so well located that you can easily get to Hartford or New Haven, as well as to New York City and Stamford. This is a lovely, family-oriented town with beautiful houses, lovely green spaces, and plenty of opportunities for a carefree and peaceful lifestyle.
