“Westport’s Crown Jewel” is the name Westport has given Longshore. Longshore has a very interesting history. Like most of Fairfield County, the land that is now Longshore Club Park was farmland, it was later turned from farmland into an estate and then this popular Country Club.
During the 1940’s Longshore Country Club was a very popular Club for local residents Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and their famous friends. Celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Babe Ruth and Henry Fonda were all guest at Longshore.
In 1960 the town of Westport bought the club for $1,950,000. Unique to Westport, Longshore was transformed into a public facility for the whole town to enjoy offering golf, tennis, paddle tennis, a swimming pool, a sailing school, and in the winter there is an ice skating rink.
When visiting Westport you can stay at the Inn at Longshore, a first class Inn with 12 guest rooms and you can dine at the award winning restaurant “Splash.” The Inn at Longshore is a very popular destination for weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and all kinds of both private and corporate events. While at the Longshore Club Park, one can expect a tranquil environment filled with well-manicured fairways, a beautiful view overlooking the Long Island Sound, and children’s laughter as they splash in the swimming pool. This 169 acre park has an 18-hole golf course, three swimming pools, picnic areas, a playground, and multiple outdoor tennis courts which turn into an ice skating rink during the winter months!
Visitors to the Longshore Club Park often bring their own lunch and eat in the picnic area, but they may also choose to use a seasonal, on-site concession stand instead. Kayak rentals, and sailing lessons are provided by the Longshore Sailing School, and the tennis program sees players of all ages and abilities, both in group and private lesson settings. In addition, the golf program is run by John Cooper, PGA Professional, and guarantees that you will meet new people, and be playing better golf in no time.
